Will Mixed Martial Arts Ever Be Legal in NY
Despite the success of Mixed martial arts within the last 5yrs, it still has not stated the status it rightfully warrants. While millions of fans can’t barely wait until the few weeks finally end in between UFC and Strikeforce cards, there’s still many cities and states in the USA that have yet to leap on the Mma wagon. Many feel it is unsafe, and even not regulated properly.
Certainly UFC President Dana White has argued this aspect to the end proclaiming that it is so controlled for a professional sport that it puts many other nationally televised ones to shame. Perhaps it’s simply the danger which the sport undoubtedly brings to the table as being an Mma fighter isn’t any picnic that scares some law makers off, but at the end of the day it is a sport and also a business believe it or not.
For a very long time, the UFC have been dancing around the state of New York City and trying it’s best to get them in the roster of fantastic places to hold fights. Nevertheless, so far they have yet to get on board. Dana has offered the state of holding two Ultimate fighting championship cards there per year, that will definitely bring a lot of income in for the area, in exchange for sanctioning mma of Mma in NY. The two of these cards annually will be held in the famous Madison Square Garden and one more someplace in upstate New York.
New York hasn’t ever been a fan of Mixed martial arts, which truly does seem odd considering it is a huge city for mma of Boxing, but is totally against Mixed martial arts. In 1997, new york state in fact completely banned MMA and is continuing to move forward to do so yet again. It really doesn’t add up to most fans, which NY has a huge market prepared to support Mma within their home towns with the cards having the potential to generate over twenty million dollars annually. New Jersey has jumped aboard and it has confirmed how successful Mixed martial arts could be along the east coast. The New Jersey area being so near to so many neighborhoods in Ny, has opened it’s doors to Mixed martial arts and profited handsomely from doing this. For the many fans that can’t have a great Mixed martial arts show in New York, they take a short road trip to Jersey and obtain the Mma fix they need for the time being.
Strikeforce will be holding a sizable venue in New Jersey shortly, making it a lot more obvious that there’s in fact an industry for Mixed martial arts there. Will this profit gain from holding Mma events in NYC alter any opinions for those in control to alter it? The lobbyists and assemblymen that once described Mixed martial arts as “barbaric” could always attend a few fights and then form their rules and opinions from those experiences, but that day may never come any time soon. It appears that for now, New York residents will have to wait it out and hopefully at some point the Mma ban will come to an end there. There might be a silver lining to this cloud as Mixed martial arts was illegal in several states for a long time, and currently has less than a handful to permit mma.
