The Best Way To Wash A Dog’s Ear Canals
Since a dog’s ears are warm and moist, it is prone to bacteria, ear mites, and yeast. So, regularly cleaning your dog’s ears is very important for the health of your dog.
Cleaning it is one thing. But the first thing that you need to learn is how to inspect it. You need to look at the outer ear and see how it looks. It should be light pink in color. It should look fairly clean, and most importantly there should not be any bad smells emanating from it.
Also, you will want to check for any wax buildup inside the ear? Do note though that some amount of dirt and wax is fine, but if you notice a larger than normal amount present, it may be a possibility that mites are around.
Make sure to do a careful check if your dog is scratching his ears. If he is, then you need to check the outside and inside of his ear. There should be no nicks, cuts, infection, mites, or scabs.
You should take your dog immediately to the vet if you see any sign of ear mites or any sign of bacterial or yeast infection.
But if there is no infection or mites, you can proceed with cleaning his ears. Note that you should only clean the outer ear of your dog. You can clean the dirt and wax using a soft cloth or cotton cloth dipped in an ear cleaning solution. The best thing to do is avoid going anywhere near the ear canal as this is an extremely delicate area and if you’re not careful, you might do more harm than good.
However, if you do want to clean deeper into the ear, ask your vet. The vet may give you solutions that can be dropped or squirted into the ears. But if the dog has no history of any ear-related problems, then deeper cleaning may only result in causing problems.
After the cleaning, the dog’s ears should be allowed to dry out completely. If your dog has long ears, all you need to do is just pin the ears together over the head for sometime. This is important for preventing any infections from occurring in the ear canal.
