Safety Vests Do You Require One?
All of us in the family are sport-minded. We either go biking, jogging, hiking, swimming or playing tennis. We want to be fit and active all the time. Because we want to be active and fit all the time, we make sure that these activities are safe and sound, particularly biking or jogging on the road. When my son was little, it was one of the family’s favorite things to do – ride bikes around the neighborhood, even into the night. Though this wasn’t so far from the present time, we did not wear anything to keep us safe. We immediately sat on our bikes and rode off! However, things nowadays have changed all that.
I hate to admit it, but it’s a perilous world out there – whizzing cars at ultra speed and carelessness. When you get in the car, you have to exercise defensive driving – and that goes the same for biking and jogging. I prefer to do these activities on the back roads and hills, but they have their dangers, too. So to minimize the possibility of an injury, I insist that all family members wear a helmet, and a reflective vest, especially if the activity is at dawn, dusk or evening. Oftentimes, we avoid the road at nights.
There are more precautionary measures you can take to ensure your safety on the road. Clearly the objective is to circumvent road accidents. A headlight on your bike can help you stay visible on the road. Helmet lights are also great because you can look at the driver to make sure he sees you. A number of countries require bells on bikes, therefore putting a horn is a sound proposal. Slowly hit on the brakes in case you have to leave the road to avoid getting run into by an approaching car. Watch out for drivers getting out of parked cars, don’t ride on sidewalks, against the traffic, stop behind a car at a stop sign or light instead of beside it – this makes sure you are seen by other drivers, use your mirror before turning, never ever move without looking behind you first, don’t weave in and out of traffic or parking lots and never make a turn without using a signal. Make sure that your headlight and taillight are on whenever you ride at night. Use a vest that reflects lights. Choose streets that are spacious, streets with slow traffic and side streets on weekends. Obeying the traffic laws and making sure you have the proper protective gear and equipment will give you the best possible odds of avoiding injury.
Many of the safety tips for biking are the same for jogging. Put on a suit with reflectors, avoid using your headphones (for biking too), and be watchful of your surroundings. The smoke from the car’s exhaust poses a threat to your respiratory system when you bike or jog on the road along with the traffic. You can breathe in plenty of carbon monoxide in just a short time including dust and fragments. Nevertheless, it is sometimes the only choice people have.
So the best thing to do is to protect yourself as much as you can and the one of the best ways is to make sure you are seen on the road and an orange or yellow reflective vest will provide safe visibility.
