Lou’s Training and Certification Process

Lou is the most recent member to sign up with the Summit County drug unit. The county Sheriff’s Office swore in the Labrador retriever a week ago to replace Coco, a soon to retire canine member. A detection dog or sniffer dog such as Lou is certainly an invaluable asset to the drug unit because of its keen sense of smell which allows it to uncover illegal drugs instantly and with the minimum disruption to the public. As per this News Leader report, Lou is going to be trained thoroughly by his handler to make sure that he can take on the duties that his predecessor was performing for the Sheriff’s office.

Lou was bought from a Western Reserve area dog breeder with funds provided by an Akron attorney that asked that he be named after his brother. The Sheriff’s Office paid $2000 for him given that he was an inexperienced puppy. A completely skilled dog could very well be priced in excess of $5000, say sources in the Sheriff’s office. Detective Keith Gowens shall be Lou’s handler and the canine is going to be staying with the Gowens family. The detective reveals that it is essential for the handler to form a close working relationship with his dog to guarantee that they make a powerful human- canine team when at work.

Lou’s Training and Certification

Lou’s training aren’t going to be restricted to the paces that detective Gowens puts him through. The canine will also undergo a structured training program at an private training center. This will prepare him for the state certification test. Once Lou clears this test, he will gain more standing as a drug detection dog. It will help significantly if evidence discovered by Lou needs to be introduced in court during any trial. As part of his training Lou will also be taken out in the field by Gowens when he is working.

Labs- The Ideal Breed for Drug Detection

Labrador retrievers are an ideal breed of canines for drug detection as well as related work. These dogs are among the most intelligent of this specie as well as possess a highly developed sense of smell. Drug detection lab retrievers can actually distinguish individual scents so that even though an illegal drug is disguised by potent odor producing substances, the canine can frequently sniff it out. The fact that retrievers are renowned for their obedience as well as loyalty only makes these canines the right selection for drug detection training where performing in perfect coordination with humankind is critical. Labrador Retrievers are also quite friendly and eager dogs by nature and this helps hugely while in the training stage.
