How to help a constipated dog

Constipation is not the sole concern of humans as dogs get constipated too. The straining hunched up dog can huff and puff continuously without being able to shout SUCCESS!. The constipation of the pet will be the problem of the owner as well. Obviously the constipated pet will be very uncomfortable. On the other hand, the owner that needs to take the dog outside will be concerned with the obvious discomfort felt by the pet. Constipation can be easily dealt with. Fortunately, this is not a life threatening concern.

Normally, the dog’s inability to pass stool will be resolve after a day or two. However, this condition tends to recur thus a pet parent has to know the reasons why the pet gets constipated. The constipation of dogs can result from the slowing down of the system. The dog’ indiscriminate eating habits can be the reason for the constipation as the inedible object ingested may be creating a blockage.

Constipation is common in long haired breeds as dried up feces that mats the hair around the anus blocks the anal opening. Clipping the hair around the area would be the solution. Constipation can be due to the diet of the dog. Inexpensive commercial dog food that is low in fiber would result to rock hard stool. A tablespoon of bran or canned pumpkin are excellent sources of fiber. The stool will be softened by adding about a tablespoon of mineral oil to the dog’s food.

One of the common reasons why the dog gets constipated is low water intake. Although dogs are greedy eaters, some are noticed to have no inclination to drink water . Sufficient water intake is necessary to prevent constipation thus the dog must be encouraged to drink water. Constipation is common in dogs that are not given opportunities to exercise. This can be prevented by providing the dog regular opportunities to exercise.

Dogs have clean habits as they would not want to dirty their sleeping area. If the owner forgets to let the dog out, the dog will take a rain check to doing its business. The longer the pet keeps the stool in, the harder it becomes. The pet must be provided with regular potty time. Install a doggy door to allow the pet to go out anytime it wants to.
