How to get the best Lighting effects, more tips from your Landscape Gardener in Sheffield

It is during these dark nights in our home town of Sheffield that many gardeners often wish they had installed more lighting to either light up their front door for visitors or to driveways and not forgetting their Landscaped gardens.

You may be looking out on your Landscape garden at his time of year and think that you need some more lights to help light that barbecue area during the long summer nights. The type of lights you decide on could be critical in terms of illumination so you need to think carefully what style you are going to use.

The choices you have are generally from either low voltage or solar power lights, however if you want to fit security lights these can still be run off your current 240 volt system if you wish. Solar power does have a downside in the way it needs a good eight hours of sunshine to become fully charged so the solar panels must not be in a shaded or dark area of your garden and this is worthwhile consideration to help you make up your mind as to which system you use.

Solar panel lights will avoid the necessity to lay down cables as the majority of the solar power lights have the solar panels built into the lights, however the amount of lighting available from these lights is still fairly low and is getting better as the technology improves plus it is cheap to run but the issue of shading must be considered.

Most of todays outside electric lights run off a 12 volt transformer. For this you will need some form of outside electrical socket or you could wire them in into a separate fuse if you have the space in your fuse box, which could be useful at some point. Obviously electric lighting will cost more than solar lighting, but can be turned on and off at will and are far brighter in terms of illumination.

Now the Landscape Garden is in place and you suddenly realise that lighting would be a benefit – well this is not at all difficult if you are planning to lay in solar lights provided your the area concerned is not sheltered and does not prevent the solar panels from getting 8 hours of daylight. If you are laying electrical cables, this should not generally be a problem but it is worth checking with your Landscape Gardener to see if any local regulations are in force.

If you decide to dig your own trench to lay in the cable just check with your Landscape Gardener or local authority whether you live in Sheffield or any other part of the country. Nine inches below ground should be adequate but check to make sure with the council and beware of any other buried pipes or cables. That is why we suggest you plan your lighting in with your original Landscaping as the cost of the extra work could be almost zero – apart from the lights and cables.
