How To Act As The Alpha Dog

If your dog pees on the carpet, knocks you down, or steals your food, these aren’t good indicator that the dog is a follower. It is more likely acting as the leader, and you, its follower. The only way to reverse this is for you to act as the top dog, in accordance to their hierarchical system – the leader.

Being the alpha dog will make sure that the dog respects and obeys you. This is done out of respect and not out of fear. A dog obeying you out of fear is a potentially dangerous situation to be in. The dogs can be violent at times when they’ve had enough.

Giving out simple and consistent commands will go a long way. If you make it clear to your dog about which behavior is acceptable or not, they will eventually respond to your training.

If and when a dog should bite you, and you have had this dog and don’t believe him to be wild or sick, then you have to take action to ensure he knows that it will not be accepted. (If there is any indication of disorientation of your dog at this time, call a vet. Dogs can bite if they are sick, hurt or scared. You should seek professional advice.)

The appropriate action is not to scold and hit your dog. You are merely aggravating him. Rather, grab the dog firmly, then bite him on the ear. This will impose your role as the alpha dog. Don’t bite him too hard so he won’t be hurt.

It is also highly recommended that you train your dog to walk with you on a leash, at your heel level. This puts the dog in an active submissive role on a regular basis and helps you to enforce that you are the boss.

I would suggest getting a book or training video to get more details on the topic, or research dog forums for advice from other owners who prefer to train themselves and not send their dogs to obedience school.
