Get a Great Dog by Adopting
Are you a dog person? They are most popular pet in the US, and it is easy to see why; they are sweet, cute and loyal. So why not get one, or two, maybe? You can get dogs at pet stores, or from breeders, but the best place to find a new furry friend for your family a shelter or rescue.
Because of irresponsible pet owners and breeders shelters and rescues are overcrowded. There are shelters and rescues with dogs of all breeds, sizes and ages. The perfect dog is probably sitting at a shelter right now waiting for you to adopt them.
It is a common misconception dogs from breeders and pet store are healthier than shelter dogs. Most shelters will have the dog examined by a vet and up to date with vaccinations. Shelter and rescue dogs will also be spayed or neutered prior to adoption prior to adoption, unless they are too young.
The shelter can tell you a lot about the personality of the dog you are considering adopting. In most cases these dogs have been exposed to children and other animals.
In most instances it is less expensive to adopt a dog than it would be to buy one from a store or a breeder. Adoption fees are generally less than the price of a dog purchased at a pet shop or from a breeder. Also, if the dog you adopt is not already spayed or neutered, there are discount programs which offer discounts rates for neutering adopted dogs.
And of course, probably the most important reason to adopt a dog is that it saves a life. Millions of animals are put down every year because there is not enough room in shelters. Dogs end up in shelters because they are over breed. Breeding dogs is a business and if there is less of a demand for breed dogs, there is not as much money to be made by breeding dogs and eventually less dogs will be breed.
Shelters try very hard to find their dogs a forever home. They certainly do not want any dog coming back to their shelter. A happy dog owner means a happy dog.
