Functions For The Metal Detector

by Michael Dawson

A metal detectors is an electromagnetic device that is used to check the availability of any metallic item in the ground and other surfaces. Besides searching for buried treasure, this theory behind it is also used for security purposes. The fun use for a metal detector is for a hobby that people are adopting to pick up metallic objects in their backyards and the beach.

In the nineteenth century, this device was invented for the purpose of discovering iron ores. It consumed a lot of energy and was therefore not a viable tool. As time went on, better ones were made. Some were used to collect what astronauts had left. Others were used to detect landmines left after a war.

It is used by archaeology experts to check for clues in the ground like treasures. Laws governing this procedure require that the treasures found to be submitted to the authority for the purpose of preservation. Many of course who use the metal detectors for their favorite hobby, finding treasures such as gold, coins or other bounty. Some of the activities people use with it include coin searching and beach combing. They collect old coins and other metal objects left by tourists in the beach.

Security metal detectors of course use the same basic premise. This is the reason why there are security devises used to scan people and their luggage as they enter buildings and taking frights. This gadget can either be hand held or placed on doors. When they detect a metallic object, they produce a sharp sound revealing the presence of that object.

There are those used to detect contamination in industries. Some of the industries include the food processing ones, textile, chemicals and packaging industries. In the textile industries, they are used to check on needles or any other broken items that may have been left when sewing. In food processing plants they are used to check if there is any metallic item that fell in when doing the processing.

The electromagnetic devices have two modes of processing. One is the active mode while the other is the passive mode. Three coils are found in the metal detector. This coils pass signals in the amplified modulation way. One coil is a transmitter while two are receivers. Whenever an alternating current is passed through the coils, a magnetic field is generated. This alternating current comes from the oscillator. The alternating current is passed through the transmitting coil.

When the device gets a metallic object, it produces a current from the object then a magnetic field follows. When the receiver coil finds a change in the magnetic fields, it means that there is a conductor object present. It then delivers the message to an electronic box that contains a speaker. This will then amplify the signal by producing a sound.

Metal detectors are used for both security and fun purposes. One can shop for one from the internet or stores. The cost depends on the company making it and its magnitude. Those that are mounted on doors are more expensive since the require additional fixtures.
