English White Terrier – An Extinct Breed
Terriers are one of the dog breeds that are in existence since the early 18th century in Great Britain. The dogs were generally called terriers or earth dogs. Owners of these dogs see no point in classifying the dogs thus for years, the dogs were lumped together as terriers. The dogs were only categorized depending on the place of origin and appearance.
This situation changed in the middle of 1800s when dog shows became a fad. Existing terriers were classified and introduced to the canine world as a “new” breed. To gain the attention of dog enthusiasts, these new breeds were given interesting fictional histories. A terrier type that is already in existence was given the name English White Terrier and introduced as a new breed.
The English White Terrier is a dog breed that weighs from 12 lbs to 20 lbs. This dog has a pure white smooth coat, a wedge shaped head with an almost flat skull and a muzzle that tapers to a perfectly black nose. This terrier has oval shaped bright black eyes that are set fairly close together. This breed has perfectly pricked ears that are commonly cropped by owners. Moderate in length, the tail that has a thick base tapers to a point.
The English White Terrier also known as Old English Terrier is an outstanding breed and it could have become a popular breed these days where keeping lap dogs has become a fad but this breed is already extinct. Generally, terriers are tenacious hunters that would follow the prey underground thus they were dubbed as earth dogs. Terriers have the ability to follow the prey into their underground burrows. Because of the rather fragile and delicate constitution, the English White Terrier was never utilized as a working breed. This breed therefore is not an ideal hunting companion. This breed of terrier has excelled in the show ring for a while.
This breed has a genetic disorder – an English White Terrier can be partially or totally deaf thus they do not make good hunters and working dogs. English White Terriers though make good lap dogs. These are affectionate dogs that would love to be hugged and cuddled. The lack of utilization as well as its genetic disorders has caused the extinction of this breed. The English White Terrier may have gone extinct but it has left an important legacy. This breed was recognized as the forebear of many present day terrier breeds. The Fox Terrier, Parson Russell Terrier, Jack Russell Terrier and the Sealyham Terrier have English White Terrier blood in their veins.
While the English White Terrier may be extinct there is still plenty to learn about it. At Sarah’s Dogs you can find out more about it’s appearance, personality, history and origin.
