Discover Adapted Bikes And Trikes For Those With Special Needs

Bicycles are fun and great exercise too. Cycling is a fun way to increase strength and develop motor skills. With adapted bikes the disabled can join friends and family for an afternoon ride. Bikes are available for kids and adults.

Many different adaptations are available to meet different challenges. Options include wider seats, back and head rests, foot rests, seat belts, clips and straps added to pedals to secure feet to the pedals. If sustained pedaling isn’t possible there are hand crank models and synchronized hand and foot pedaling adaptions. Electronic devices can keep a bike moving at a minimum speed. Hand controls are an option for those who can’t pedal at all. There are seats for children to ride in front of or behind an adult bike.

Bicycles and Tricycles can be special ordered and custom built to meet special needs. Specialty companies also sell accessories to adapt an off the shelf bike. Add on accessories include adaptive pedals, wide seats, head and back supports, and seat belts.

Tandem cycles are designed to let one or both riders steer or pedal. Some have a smaller seat in front so kids enjoy a front row seat. Others connect 2 bicycles side by side and can even pair a bicycle and a tricycle so riders of different abilities share the ride. For those who can’t pedal, rumble seats can be attached to a regular bicycle that allow for co-steering.

Wheelchairs can be attached to the front of a bike so a disabled person enjoys a front row seat. Hand cycles let the disabled pedal, steer, and stop a bike with arm power only. Trailer bicycles attach the rear section of a bike to another bicycle. The rider on the trailer can stop pedaling whenever they need to rest.

Adapted bikes are expensive but for some they may be considered therapeutic equipment covered all or in part by medical insurance. Other disability services in your locality may have funds to assist. There are also many nonprofits, local and national service groups that help purchase special need bikes and trikes for special need kids, teens, and adults.

Adapted cycles and adapted bikes are available through quest 88.
