Cleaning your Rabbit Hutch in 5 Stress-Free Steps

You probably know by now that rabbits are not high maintenance pets to keep. Feeding them does not need to be done every hour. They also settle for 2-3 cups of vegetables, or even grass and hay will do. You need not give them a bath all the time since they clean themselves up.

However, they also need your attention.

It doesn’t matter whether their rabbit hutch is located indoor or outdoor just as long as you manage to keep their surroundings clean. This is especially true when you have more than one pet bunny to prevent possible diseases to spread. Here’s how to clean your rabbit hutches.

1.First, transfer your furry friends to another place before cleaning their rabbit hutch. It’s okay to use wire cages or wooden boxes since it’s only for the meantime.

2. Take away all accessories found inside your rabbit hutch. Layers of newspapers on the floor should be taken out. Bedding, feeding bowls as well as water bottles should not be inside the hutch during cleaning time.

3. Any kind of disinfectant will do. It’s alright to use only soap and water but in order to eliminate odors completely from the rabbit hutch, using vinegar is recommended. Walls and floors should be scrubbed thoroughly. All you need to do is place a bowl of vinegar inside to eliminate the odors.

4. Put everything back in place if you think the rabbit hutch is now clean enough. First, layer some newspapers on the floor.

5. If you are obsessive and compulsive with cleanliness, you can always give your bunny a bath before putting them in. This may get them sick, though so it’s not recommended at all. They have very sensitive skin and fur so extra care is needed.

Cleaning rabbit hutches may be done every week, if you have time. Isolate a sick bunny and thoroughly clean the spot. Here are a few ways to keep your rabbit hutch clean.

1.Lining the floor with layers of newspapers is one of the best ways to keep your rabbit hutch clean. Although they are innately clean creatures, they tend to defecate everywhere. If you have a lining covering the area, you just have to take the newspapers out on a daily basis.

2.Sprinkle kitty litter under the layers of the newspapers. This will absorb the smell of feces and urine.

3.Change the bedding as often as possible. The rabbit hutch might have their wastes all over. Excreted waste is often the source of diseases like diarrhea.

Rabbits can keep themselves clean without your help. However, these animals are so cute that children will want to carry them around a lot. So keeping your bunnies healthy is also one way of keeping your kids safe.
