Choosing Dog Food for Your Dog

by Dirk Gruenberg

Do you love your dog and do you only want what's best for him? Of course you do. Don't we all? Dog lovers adore their little friends and for good reason. So, yes, we do want what is best for them. But sometimes it is hard to decide what the "best" is, especially when it comes to dog food.

How do you choose which dog food is best? First, know what kind of food is fit for the breed of your dog. If dry food is best for him, then go for the best quality of dry dog food.

Dry food is generally more enjoyable for dogs, because they can chew on it more. Hence, it is also good for their teeth. Then also consider their age. Older dogs might need less protein in their food than puppies, for example. Generally, puppies can start eating adult dog food after they are half a year old.

Overfeeding him with puppy foods damages his kidneys. In switching his diet, mix a small amount of the new food to his regular food, and increase the amount the next day until he gets used to it.

Third, feed your dogs the same time every day. You can go for feeding him twice a day, but once is already good. Just be consistent, and follow the routine.

You will find that good dog food will make your dog's coat shine, his stools will be of good color and well-formed and he will be sick less often which will reduce your veterinarian costs. And wouldn't that be nice?

Alright, so moving on: How much should you feed him? First, keep in mind that overfeeding is as much of an issue with dogs as it is with humans. It is simply not healthy.

So, make sure to get some good advice on the amount you should feed. Ask the previous owner or your vet. Also just look at your dog. If he is too big, you should be able to tell. Use your common sense on that one.

However, you can adjust the amount of food on times when he is active, usually in the summer. Again, do it gradually. Rapid weight change is not good for dogs.
