Characteristics Of An Albino Leopard Gecko


Albino leopard geckos are one unique kind of leopard geckos. Albinism is a pigmentation disorder present in both humans and animals. This is because of the absence of a particular enzyme called melanin. Obvious characteristics are seen in the lack of pigment in both skin and eyes.

In the case of these reptiles, albinism is not viewed as defects but is rather known as an innovation because of the absence or lack in pigmentation. Albino leopard geckos are present in different colors except of course black. Since albinism with geckos are unusual, lizards with this trait is rare. This makes them expensive more than those in usual pattern do.

There are also different strains of these albino geckos.

One kind of this gecko is the Tremper strain, which are also called Texas albino. Its eyes have silver pigmentation that is often mistaken as red stripes.

Rainwater strain is one kind of albino displaying lighter color amid all the other types of geckos. However, its eyes are the darkest among all albinos. They have an overall yellowish shade.

Just recently, the newest strain of albino geckos is made known, the Bell strain gecko. They have the brown spots and pink color. When, the eyes of Tremper and Rainwater strains grow dark as they aged the shade eyes of this kind of gecko remains consistent from childhood to adulthood.

When pet nicely, and maintained healthy, these geckos can have a lifespan of almost twenty years. However, during its lifetime, you cannot avoid the fact that they may acquire health problems even after attempts of providing good habitat. You have to consult the help of vets just in case leopard gecko problems arise.

Some of the possible problems geckos could have are the following:

Digestive Tract Obstruction — This kind of incident happen if your gecko has taken in too large food that in cannot digest it. This would typically be a sand, gravel, or any substrate. This kind of event can be fatal if not managed right away. You can prevent this from happening by making sure that the substrates inside the cage are small enough for geckos to consume.

Mouth Infection — Geckos may also experience mouth infections. This can be caused by fighting, a dirty cage, or accidental injury. You may take note of the presence of lesions and swelling around the mouth of your gecko. You can treat this by cleaning the sore and applying oral antibiotic.

Respiratory Infection — This can occur if the cage of your geckos is too cold. A sign of infection may include mucus bubbles on the nostrils and labored breathing.

Injuries — This incidence happen if you keep multiple geckos in a single cage at the same time. You should bear in mind that it is important that you do not overcrowd geckos as each of them should have their own hiding place.
