Are Knockout Roses The Simplest Roses To Plant?

Breeders from all over the world are always on the lookout for better roses. Roses that have good disease resistance, are hardy in most climates, including the colder zones of the world, and can retain their shape and form without a lot of fussing. Knockout roses likely come close to ticking all of those boxes.

This is probably one of the better roses for a beginner to try their hand at due to their hardiness and disease resistance. It does not grow too tall or big so you don’t have to worry too much about pruning it into shape mainly because it preserves a small compact shape normally. It is even sold as being “self cleaning” meaning that the once a bloom has completed flowering, the petals fall freely from the stem, helping the gardener time on having to deadhead the spent flowers.

It is fine if you don’t mind getting a lot of rosehips on your plant, nevertheless, when you prefer to have far more blooms rather than rosehips it’s recommended to give them a tidy up and deadhead them frequently to encourage prolific flowering. A ton of power goes into the plant making a rosehip; vitality that could be used for that plant to develop much more flowers. So the choice is up to the gardener’s preference.

Their disease resistance is a different reason why knockout roses are good to grow for someone just starting out growing roses. Having to muck around with chemicals to spray for diseases isn’t to everyone’s liking. Because knockout roses have been bred to be resistant to diseases like black spot along with other fungal leaf disorders, you do not need to get worried about using chemicals inside your garden.

Just make sure the area you plant them in has well drained soil; a good soil structure; and gets a minimum of 4 to 5 hours of sun each day, and you will have success at growing these robust roses. Obviously it does not hurt to amend your soil with some aged manures or composts well before planting if you want to get your knockout rose off to the very best start.
