Alternate Types of Kick Drum Microphones

Musicians are at the mercy of their microphones. If you do not have good-timbre mics, you cannot record quality tunes. And nobody wants to hear a shoddy version of a tune you worked so hard on. One subject that seems to beget a lot of bewilderment is kick-drum microphones. It is perhaps beneficial to grasp what kinds (and how many types) of kick drum mics there are, so here are the broad categories:

Extensive diaphragm condensers-These will be fabulous for singing but also for bass drums

Broadcast Dynamics-These are high-end dynamic mics with horizontal EQ profiles. They can be for kick drums or broadcast.

Dual-Element Mics-These are specific kick microphones with two transducers. Each is optimized for getting another sound.

Interface Mics-These are also known as Pressure Zone Microphones, or PZM for short. The edge mics provide broad coverage and sparkling pick-up.

Loudspeaker Transducers-These are purpose-built bass instrument microphones. They are formed from speaker or headset drivers. These are generally first-rate at picking up low frequencies.

Modified Dynamics-These mics have scooped mids. The most common and well-known bass drum microphones are modified dynamic mics.

Of course, any drummer needs a punchy, high-fidelity sound that will make beats appear slick. But, another thing to remember is whether or not your drum microphone gear can be simply disassembled and taken with you anywhere. If you are a performer, you must have the ease of reliable and transportable kit for the road. You will also want to ensure your kit is sturdy.

In general, any mic can be used as a bass drum mic, but these categories should present you a sense of what to count on with several types of microphones. Using the correct drum microphones can either heighten or diminish the nature of your recordings, so make sure you have the proper kit. Play around with what you have until you have achieved the ultimate sound.
