A Film Consultant – Reasons To Hire One

It is standard practice for a film consultant to assist the production team on a film or tv undertaking. The in-house writers for a program may not be familiar with all the detailed technical knowledge of their script. Still, they would like to make sure that plot developments are believable and dialogue sounds realistic. Accordingly, the production team will sometimes bring in a expert authority to consult on the project.

The consultant can come from a number of different specialities. Law procedural programs such as Law & Order may need several different consultants – a lawyer, a police expert, and perhaps a forensic scientist. Other shows like Grey’s Anatomy may require a medical film consultant. Thus, experts with advanced degrees and lots of work experience in their field are hired to make the script realistic.

This process has been used for a long time. Recently, the hiring of film consultants has burgeoned due to more sophisticated audiences. In the mid 1970s, many projects with scripts involving computers had very corny and hackneyed dialogue. Back then not many people owned their own computer. However, everybody these days has a PC, so movies can’t get away with poor quality dialogue any longer.

Two areas where the believability of scripts has greatly improved are hospital shows and police procedural shows. These include many of the longest lasting and most popular television shows. For example, the CSI franchise is one of the most-watched programs on its network. Many doctor dramas are very popular as well – some of them include Grey’s Anatomy, House, and House. In these programs, medical issues intersect with the character elements of the teleplay. In order to ensure that plot developments are accurate, a film consultant is an essential part of the creative team. The consultant can also assist with dialogue that requires technical accuracy.

If the conversations in a script lack accuracy, a film or television program may be subject to ridicule. Worse yet, it may lose audience acclaim and go down in the ratings. For this reason, it is worthwhile for a show to pay for a film consultant to look at the script. Since audiences are able to determine whether dialogue is realistic, they will be more motivated to keep tuning in to programs that have high production values. This results in higher ratings and more advertising dollars. Only in the case when a project has a very tight budget should the medical jargon in the script be left to the in-house writers. Although there is a wealth of information available online for many subjects, it is preferable to have a film consultant review the script.
